Exploring Pittsburgh in Photos

Since 1997, we’ve been compiling a Pittsburgh Photo Calendar that we send to our far-flung family and friends to share some of the things we’ve seen in our daily lives and adventures in this city. Now that many people don’t use paper calendars, some of our usual recipients have asked to see the photos online instead. So here they are! (This is not the first time our calendar, which is supposed to be a Christmas present, hasn’t been ready until sometime in January, sigh!)

January: Frick Park

Round skylight with wrought-iron design in the center of a corbeled rotunda of reddish-brown blocks (are they brick or stone?) with leaf and shield motifs. One of the arches around the perimeter opens into a 1980s-style light-rail station alongside a highway overpass.

Sun shines through clouds and tree branches onto an asphalt path in the forest. Trees are bare, but a few understory plants have faint green leaves.

March: Schenley Park

April: Phipps Conservatory

Water sprays up from a fountain and cascades over the edge of the basin. In the background are an arched steel bridge and a wooded hill.

May: Point State Park and West End Bridge

Looking between clumps of trees and down a concrete staircase, into a neighborhood of densely-spaced old houses; in the distance, churches, other buildings, an arched steel bridge, and across the river a hill with trees and buildings on it.

Ivy climbs up a concrete-block wall alongside a garage door that has separated into two sections with ivy growing into the crack between them. A small tree, bushes with white flowers, and other plants have grown up in front of the wall and door.

July: Shady Avenue, Squirrel Hill

Two high-rise buildings of light brown brick are connected by a covered walkway with 3 stone arches and hanging lamps. A brick plaza is in the foreground, a modern concrete building and traffic light in the background.

August: Forbes Quadrangle, University of Pittsburgh

Edge of a hill where several trees are rooted, with more trees in the background. Some leaves have turned red/orange while others are still green.

September: Schenley Park

Garden of zinnias, corn, nasturtiums, etc. fills the top of a hill alongside sidewalk. Fog blurs the background of houses, trees, utility poles, Blind Pedestrian Crossing sign, and a black iron fence.

October: Edible Schoolyard at Colfax K-8 School

Bright blue sky above skyscrapers, river crossed by several bridges, big new apartment buildings on the near bank, all far below our vantage point. A small building in the foreground at right is the upper station of Monogahela Incline, and a small amount of the incline track is visible descending the mountain.

Why not explore more of Pittsburgh in 2024? It’s a very pleasant part of Earth!
